Chartreuse 1965-1966 | El Gruño
The Chartreuse "El Gruño" of 1965-1966 (Tarragona)
The series of Chartreuse "El Gruño" (which means "the cabochon" in English) unfortunately didn't last very long. Produced for two years only, from 1965 to 1966, this cuvée came with a protruding glass seal that often broke during transport and storage. Each manipulation was deemed to be a huge risk for these bottles, hence the very short lifespan of this entire series of Chartreuses.
This offshoot of the original 1964-1966 cuvée, the bottles of El Gruño bore the mention "SCDVO", for "Stat Crux Dum Volvitur Orbis" (the Carthusian Fathers' motto, which means "The cross remains while the world turns". The artwork on the glass actually represents one of the stained glass windows found in the Grande Chartreuse Monastery. In 1966, the monks decided to drop this bulging seal, replacing it with something flatter.
