Discover the appellations of the Montagne de Reims
The Montagne de Reims is a gigantic plateau located in the Champagne region, in the Marne department, right between Reims and Epernay. Not only is it a 50,000 hectares natural park, it's also a collection of winemaking villages. The Montagne de Reims might mainly be a huge forest area (which was entirely managed by the Benedict Monks in the past), it hides a 2,000 hectares vineyard.
The soil of this vineyard is rich, full of limestone, silica and other minerals. As for the grapevines of the Montagne de Reims, they grow on the hills, at 200 meters of altitude. The grape varieties found here are the Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier (more than 60% of the entire vineyard) and a few vine stocks of Chardonnay (mostly found around the communes of Trépail and Villers-Marmery). Many villages have their own grands crus, such as Ambonnay, Louvois, Mailly-Champagne, or Verzenay.
Each year, the Montagne de Reims vineyard can produce 50,000 hectoliters of champagne on average. The use of grapes like the Pinot variety give birth to what's known as "Blanc de Noirs" Champagne. Meaning a clearly white wine, but made with red grapes. It's the exact opposite of the "Blanc de Blancs" Champagne, which is exclusively made using white grape varieties like Chardonnay.
