Pleasure Wine: American Wines

Discover the wines from the United States

The main wine making state in the United States is of course California, which represents 90% of the entire production. And, when it comes to wine, the Napa Valley is number one. Located to the North of San Francisco, this region probably became famous because of Robert Mondavi, a genius strategist and winemaker. He was the first to use grape varieties as a selling point, instead of appellations. In America, winegrowing began during the 18th century, when pilgrims brought grapevines from Europe. Of course, it then took a big hit during the 1920's and 30's, thanks to Prohibition. As for today, we can say that wine making is experiencing a form of renaissance.

The USA are the fourth biggest wine producer in the world, with California doing most of the work. There are 500 000 hectares of vineyards in the entire country, which means that North America is n°5 in the top five when it comes to sheer size (the four other countries being Spain, France, Italy and Turkey).
