Pouilly-Fuissé

Pleasure Wine: Pouilly-Fuissé Wines

Discover the Pouilly-Fuissé appellation

This AOC is one of the best wine appellations in Burgundy, since 1940. The Pouilly-Fuissé vineyard represents 760 hectares of steep slopes surrounding four villages in the Mâconnais: Solutré, Vergisson, Chaintré and of course Fuissé. The soils, mainly clay, limestone and sometimes shale, are fully exposed to sunlight. The grapevines are scattered at different altitudes, between 250 and 350 meters.

The climate of Pouilly-Fuissé is a temperate continental type, with hot summers and cold winters. The vineyards are actually ideally situated, benefiting from both the regulating influence of the Saône Valley and the proximity to the Mâconnais mountains. These favorable climatic conditions allow for an optimal maturation of the grapevines.

The terroir can produce 42,000 hectoliters of white wines, which are all very diverse thanks to the varied richness of the soil. The harvest is actually a bit peculiar: on the northern slopes of Vergisson, it happens two weeks after the one in Chaintré (south). The latter batch of grapes is juicier, whereas the Vergisson one tends to be more mineral and dynamic.

The wines produced in the Pouilly-Fuissé appellation are made exclusively from the Chardonnay grape variety. The appellation has two counterpartsPouilly-Loché and Pouilly-Vinzelles, which also produce white wines. The Chardonnay of Pouilly-Fuissé is renowned for producing rich, aromatic, and complex white wines with good acidity, beautiful structure, and a touch of minerality.
