Puligny, nestled between Meursault and Chassagne-Montrachet, changed its name to "Puligny-Montrachet" in 1879. This transformation is reflected in its terroir. The village appellation, a mix of full-bodied wines near Meursault and more aromatic as you get closer to Chassagne, is made on a 200 hectares vineyard. The Premiers Crus (planted at 270-320 meters of altitude) follow the same pattern. They can be found in 24 localities, containing 14 climates. Among the most famous ones, we have: Les Combettes, Les Folatières, Les Pucelles and Clavaillon.
The soils are made of brown limestone and calcareous clay marls. The still Burgundy wines produced here can be red or white. Every year, the Puligny-Montrachet vineyard has an output of 11,000 hectoliters, with more than 5,000 hectoliters for the Premiers Crus. The 2 Grands Crus in Puligny-Montrachet are the Chevalier-Montrachet (a bit over 7 hectares) and the Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet (less than 4 hectares).
