Volnay
Discover the Volnay appellation wines
Volnay is located between Pommard (to the north) and Meursault (to the south), at 275 meters of altitude. This tiny village, with its steep and narrow streets, is home to 300 inhabitants and more than 50 wine estates. Its vineyard grows on the south-east clay slopes of the Chaignot mountain. Volnay wines are famous for their sweetness and subtlety, as they're often considered to be the finest red wines of the entire Côte de Beaune. The 220 hectares of grapevines found on hills that are facing east, on marls and lithographic limestone soils that can resist erosion.
The red wines produced in this Burgundy vineyard (less than 9,000 hectoliters per year) come exclusively from Pinot Noir grapes. The only climate that can make white wine is the Santenots (29 hectares), with its Chardonnay. The Santenots climate can also bear the Meursault name, and it's the one of the 30 localities (126 hectares in total) found in the vineyard that can be classified as Premiers Crus.
